The Niagara peninsula is the largest and most concentrated winemaking region in Canada.
Nestled in the picturesque countryside along Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, and protected by the elevations and ridges of the Niagara Escarpment, vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula, Twenty Valley, The Bench and Niagara-on-the-Lake flourish with a terroir perfect for cool-climate red and white wines.
The region supports a diversity of over 46 different grape varieties across over 13,600 acres and 10 sub-appellations. This area is home to premium wines consisting of over 55% VQA wines. There are about 320 wineries spread out across the region and about 200 of them have VQA certfication. Unfortunately, given the taxes that wineries pay and the lack of government support, most of these wineries are running at a loss and would be happy to sell to a willing buyer. This is a small industry and everyone knows everybody so connections are key to entering the industry.
